The North East Lincolnshire Schools’ Sports Partnership was in action again at the first Primary Schools’ Orienteering Championships. Tristan Creighton and Nick Hanson (Sports Partnership) who organised and sponsored the competition were on hand helping the young people to gain success at Orienteering.
Oasis Academy Wintringham hosted the event, providing their site and facilities for the convenience of the competitors. Each of the four schools participating had been trained up to competition level by Brian Slater who put on 2 sessions each for the schools using their own school site and newly produced maps. Laceby Acres was the only school of the 4 to have an Orienteering map prior to the training sessions.
Brian Slater (course planner), Neil Harvatt (electronic timing official and course checker), both of HALO plus Kris Cook and Glyn Cook officiated.
Pupils from years 5 and 6 took part. The Year 5 course was 1.3km and the Year 6 was 1.5km. The competitors were briefed at ‘pre-start’ and ‘start’ by Kris and Glyn who reminded the pairs and 3s of the basics for completing the course successfully. The fastest pairs/3s came in below the 10 minute mark and all were in within 34 minutes. It was a great experience for the pupils who rose to the occasion showing excellent sporting attitudes.
Well done indeed to the winners of the Year 5 race – Oliver, Jack and Tom D., from South Parade Primary; and congratulations to James, Morgan and Marcus from Coomb Briggs Primary School in Immingham who led the Year 6 field. The team prizes go to South Parade (Grimsby) Y5, and to Cannon Peter Hall (Immingham) Y6. Click this link for detailed results.
Grimsby Evening Telegraph covered the event, publishing their article on Monday 7th March. We are hoping to increase school participation next spring when the event will be staged again.
