This time of the year there are a number of strange events that take place. One of these events, which was held on the 11/12 July, was the annual 24 hour race organised by East Hull Harriers at the Costello Stadium in Hull on 11/12 July.

Mary Carrick, who has competed in the event regularly in the past, was one of this year’s 47 starters and finished in 28th place overall having covered 69.21 miles in the 24 hours, which meant completing no less than 278 laps of the stadium track. She won the Lady Veterans (over 55) class. Her previous best distance in the time was 89.8 miles but she does say that she was a lot younger then! When asked “don’t you find it boring running round and round the same track for 278 laps” she explained that “every four hours we change direction and run the other way round – which is something to look forward to”.

Competitors started at 10.00 a.m. in the morning and finished at the same time the next day. Despite a seven hour downpour throughout most of the night the overall winner, Angela Sadler, completed 121.84 miles. In second place overall was William Sichel who completed 116.46 miles. Eleven competitors exceeded 100 miles.

There is no accounting for taste!
