2015 Humber Games Orienteering Final
Some 350 students from 20 Primary Schools and 10 Secondary Schools from all over the Humber Region came together for the Orienteering Final of the Humber Games. Each individual and school had qualified from one of the four area finals (Hull, NE Lincs, East Riding and N Lincs) that had taken place in the preceding weeks. In total over 1000 students had taken part in the qualifying rounds.
The courses provided a navigational challenge for the students in the grounds of Hymers College. A few failed to navigate correctly to all the control sites on their course, but the vast majority of students handled the challenges well with some very fast times seen.

In the Year 5 competition, 40 pairs from 14 different schools, took part on the 1.5 km course. The fastest pair were from North Ferriby (Charlie and Nathan) in a time of 12:05, 18 seconds ahead of St Vincent’s, Sunny and Kai. In third place were David and Luke from Sidmouth in a time of 12:47.

The Year 6 contest, in which 38 pairs from 15 different schools competed on a 1.7km course, was the closest fought of the day. Aidan and Emma from Stamford Bridge were clear leaders with a time of 8:47, more than two minutes clear of Milosz and Przenek from St Charles. Third place were Finley and Sam from Hildethorpe in 12:47.

In the Year 7 competition, 27 pairs took part from 9 secondary schools on the 1.8km course. The Vale and Longcroft dominated taking the top five spots. Fastest pair were Jacob and Oliver from Longcroft School, in 10:12, almost a minute clear of Jacob and Josh from The Vale. Third place were Longcroft’s Owen and Jo in 11:33.

In the Year 8 contest, 23 pairs from 8 schools competed on the 1.9 km course. The fastest pair were Sebastian and Ryan from The Boulevard in 10:09. In second place were Sam and Aidan from Sir John Nelthorpe in 10:40 with Boulevard’s Abdullah and Eligijus in third only one second behind.

3. Longcroft, 272 points

In the Year 9 contest 26 individuals from 10 schools took part on the 2.1 km course. This was another close run contest with five points separating the top three schools. Fastest of the day was Ben, from Archbishop Sentamu in 11:55. Sirius’s Jack was only 16 seconds behind with third place, St Mary’s Joshua a further 40 seconds behind.

After seeing all the talent on show, Neil Harvatt, the organiser of the event, invited anyone who was interested in doing more orienteering to come along to the Beverley Club Night which takes place from 6.30 to 8 pm every Monday during term time at Longcroft School, Beverley starting in September. Suitable for all ages and abilities - no experience is necessary - qualified coaches are on hand. Club Nights are also held in Grimsby on Wednesday evenings during the Autumn and Spring terms.
