We were blessed with good weather for our first ‘Have a Go’ at Orienteering event this century.  We had an admirable group of participants who were very competent at their initial try at Orienteering.  Jake and Lucia Townrow (14 &12) were first boy and girl on the ‘White’ course (7 minutes 19 seconds & 7 minutes 25 seconds respectively), followed by Evan Scott (M10) in 3rd place.  Lucia came in 1st on the ‘Yellow’ course only 45 seconds infront of Mary Vickers (W50);  Josh Bell,(M10) was in 3rd place taking 18:16.

The longer and more technical courses were won by father and daughter Brian and Charlotte Ward;  Brian having pipped Charlotte to the post by 16 seconds on the 2.9 km Technical course.  However Charlotte got revenge on the ‘Mazes’ taking seconds off dad on all of the four 400m courses.  Local junior Sam Offler (M16) came a cool 3rd on the Technical course being only 3:26 behind the winner. For the enthusiast who may wish to scrutinise the courses the split times for each ‘leg’ within the course are here.  John & John’s splits are separate for no other reason than providence.

We had a maze which was temporarily built for the event.  There were 4 different courses to enjoy and some of the young participants made full use of them completing all. The results can be found here.

A band of HALO stalwarts were in attendance to introduce newcomers to the sport.  Thanks to all who helped.

Similar less formal events and activities take place At the HALO Club Night every Wednesday at Oasis site Grimsby.  Adults £2, U/21s £1; there are concessions for families.  We start at 6:30 and finish at 8pm, bring a torch and appropriate clothing for the weather.  All welcome.

Oasis Academy Wintringham is working in partnership with HALO (Humberside & Lincolnshire Orienteers) to develop orinteering in the area.  The support we get from Oasis’ is strong and much appreciated.  We will be able to orienteer indoors in the sports hall for part of our session starting this Wednesday.

Next Sunday 7th November is an event at Primrose Hill, Scunthorpe.  All welcome.

For your diaries Cleethorpes Country Park, 22nd January 2011, 1 to 3pm.  More info at http:/www.halo-orienteering.org.uk
