This weekend, HALO’s newly elected Chairman Neil Harvatt won not one, but two medals at the Euro City Tour Series at Porto.
Competing in 3 events over the weekend Neil came third in both the Night Event on Friday (around the World Heritage City Area) and the prestigous Euro City Race Tour Event on Sunday morning (around the Foz coastal district).
On the Saturday he was in 6th place in the Score event in Porto’s picturesque City Park, this was mainly due to the fact that the Veterans and Super Veterans ran in the same class – (so 50 plus competitors). This latter event was a mental challenge as well as physical as it entailed gathering exactly 1000 points with a maximum of 30 controls in 90 minutes. The points for each control ranged from 0 to 100. In the 28 degree heat it proved a real test with Neil’s mathematical background helping enormously. Very few competitors recorded the exact total of 1000 points, one HALO competitor, Isoldt H did so in the V/SV W class but unfortunately visited 2 too many control sites when accumulating the 1000 points – so close to another HALO medal.
The whole event was very well organised, staged in superb surroundings and with superb weather.
As you read this Neil will no doubt be polishing his medals on the plane home. Hopefully the tinned sardines, he was also presented with will be allowed through the hand luggage controls at the airport – he might even share them with you at the HALO Awards Dinner in a few weeks time!
P.S. Neil’s achievement was surpassed by Amanda Roberts of LOG who won one silver and two bronze medals, but our Chairman did beat LOG’s Chairman Paul who only won one silver.
